Minton Farm
455 Cherry Gardens Road, Cherry Gardens, South Australia 5157

Minton Farm is non-profit, voluntary rescue centre…
Minton Farm Animal Rescue Centre located at Cherry Gardens in the Adelaide Hills region of South Australia, is a non-profit, non-government organization run entirely on community goodwill and volunteer time. The centre has been running successfully since its inception in 1992. Through the tireless efforts of Bev Langley, the centre’s owner and manager, Minton Farm has been recognized internationally for the work at the centre with an IFAW award. In 2005 alone the centre was responsible for 597 rescues of animals in need and to date overall has rescued almost 8,000 native animals.

Here in South Australia it is incredibly rare to find a funding body that will support both animal rescue work and conservation education. The centre manages to scrap through financially through donations, fund-raising and small grants that we have received in the past from local councils (see below). We are continually applying for new grants in order to gain funding for some much-needed materials associated with our rescue work and also funding to develop a more comprehensive education program that will compliment our rescue work.

At our centre our primary objective is to educate and enrich the lives of community members through the rescue and care of injured and orphaned native animals. We believe that all of us can help to save Australia’s unique wildlife. At Minton Farm Animal Rescue Centre we strongly believe that through education we can help to change attitudes and bad habits so that generations to come can appreciate the natural world that here in Australia we are blessed to have at our doorstep.

At Minton Farm, we are a voluntarily community organization and feel that it is our responsibility to combine our rescue work with community education. We strongly believe that the two go hand in hand because without educating the community and changing attitudes towards nature, then the rescue work that we do would all be done in vain!!!!

The centre attends numerous fund-raising events each year, has school groups come through the centre and does presentations at schools and
at community groups such as scouts, rotary and other similar clubs. However being a non-government, not for profit organization the material we have for education is minimal. However with a strong need for education in our community and with the manager/owner (Bev Langley) having a background in primary school teaching we believe that conservation education is an area that we can better utilize to our advantage.

Calypso Star Charters – Shark Cage Diving
3/10 South Quay Boulevard, Port Lincoln South Australia 5606

The Calypso Star Charter story

Calypso Star Charters was founded in 1990 by Captain Rolf Czabayski. Rolf was an avid game fisherman who had tagged and released many Great White Sharks before their protection in 1997. Rolf holds the final World record ever issued for the capture of a White Shark, 599Kg on 15kg line class, a fine achievement.

Fishing to cage diving

Over time, Rolf’s attention turned from fishing for Sharks to cage diving charters. On his 35 foot Bertram vessel Rolf could take 3-4 guests on charters for 3-5 days. In those days there were several locations for Shark Cage Diving including the Neptune Islands, Dangerous Reef and several Islands in the Sir Joseph Banks Group to the North of Port Lincoln.

Cage diving specific vessel

As the business gradually grew, Rolf made the big decision to upgrade his beloved Bertram to the custom built ‘Calypso Star’ in December 2000. This vessel offered a level of comfort not seen before in Shark Diving in South Australia. Shark cage diving remained a ‘hobby’ for Rolf, his family home and other business interests were in Adelaide while the boat was in Port Lincoln. The 3-4 day itinerary was the core business and in 2002 Andrew Wright became Rolf’s first full time deckhand.
